15 oklahoma sooners at syracuse orangemen 2nd half 1994 football

The 15th ranked Oklahoma Sooners coached by Gary Gibbs made the long trip to Syracuse, New York to play the Orangemen. This, like the 1997 game, would be an instant classic. Oklahoma, led by several offensive playmakers including Quarterback Garrick mcgee, Running Backs Jerald Moore & James Allen, and Wide Receivers PJ Mills & Albert Hall would jump out to a 24-0 at halftime. The Orangemen would come storming back in the second half to take a 29-27 lead with less than a minute to go. mcgee would then lead the Sooners on a last minute drive down the field to set up a game winning field goal by kicker/punter Scott Blanton. The 1994 season would be a disappointing one for the program. So much talent gone to waste. Although, Gary Gibbs underperformed that season, some Oklahoma fans treatment of him was classless.

The Dome was as loud as ever for the Minnesota game to start the year. The team is getting more competitive, I think the big and loud crowds will be back.

  2. OCUSA says:

didn’t the celebration penalty cause them to have to kick a longer extre point, and miss it?

  3. TheCardCheat says:

That Marvin Harrison kid was pretty good.

@piercematt Gibbs was ok, but couldn’t win the big games. He was 2-15-1 against Texas, Nebraska, and Colorado and back then , just being “ok” wasn’t good enough. Had they known what was about to happen for the next 4 years then I think they would’ve reconsidered, but hindsight is 20/20. Its not entirely his fault though. Its hard to recruit kids when you’re banned from bowls for 2 years and are limited on scholarships. He was ok, just not great.

I went to the ‘Cuse-WVU game this year and it was depressing. The Dome used to rock back in the day!! I hope they turn things around!

  6. piercematt says:

They should’ve never got rid of Gary Gibbs and stupid mistake he would have been fine until the stoops era

  7. piercematt says:

    Awesome! Thanks for the footage

  8. arenateam says:

Midfield?! OU ran the ball back to the 36. Syracuse lost because they couldn’t stop OU on a 4th and 13!

  9. rainwave23 says:

SU lost because of a BS excessive celebration penalty that gave OU the ball at midfield. SU was down 24-0 in the 2nd half, came back to take a lead with 1 min left, and they can’t celebrate? Figures they were big 12 officials. They wouldn’t let OU lose that game.
